Sutter East Bay Medical Group (SEBMG) seeks an outstanding educator for the position of Associate Program Director of our Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program based at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center (ABSMC).

 

Founded in 2005, Sutter East Bay Medical Group (SEBMG) is a rapidly growing multi-specialty medical group whose physicians and advanced practice clinicians work in more than ten care centers and four hospitals in the San Francisco East Bay Area. Sutter East Bay Medical Group is affiliated with the Sutter East Bay Medical Foundation (SEBMF), a not-for-profit health care organization providing operational and administrative support to our medical group. The foundation provides the latest technology and clinical support, allowing clinicians to focus on delivering exceptional patient care. Position Details:

This is a key leadership opportunity within a newly ACGME-accredited Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Program, offering the chance to help shape a growing residency program from the ground up. The Associate Program Director (APD) partners closely with the Program Director to provide strategic, educational, and operational leadership while maintaining an active clinical practice.

The APD plays a critical role in resident education, program administration, accreditation compliance, curriculum development, faculty engagement, and continuous program improvement. This position offers the opportunity to influence the training and professional development of future OB/GYN physicians while helping build a culture of excellence in a new residency program.

 

The OB/GYN Associate Residency Program Director will maintain an active clinical practice while dedicating up to 17 hours per month of protected administrative time to support residency leadership, educational oversight, faculty development, recruitment, accreditation activities, and program improvement efforts.

The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Program Leadership and Administration

  • Collaborate with the Program Director, faculty, and GME leadership to support the vision and strategic direction of the residency program.
  • Assist with program administration and operations in accordance with ACGME and institutional requirements.
  • Support accreditation efforts, including preparation for reviews, reporting requirements, and ongoing compliance activities.
  • Participate in program initiatives focused on quality improvement, innovation, and educational excellence.

Resident Education and Development

  • Assist in the design, implementation, and evaluation of the residency curriculum.
  • Help ensure a high-quality clinical learning environment across inpatient and outpatient training sites.
  • Participate in resident recruitment, interview activities, and selection decisions.
  • Provide teaching, mentorship, coaching, and career guidance to residents.
  • Support resident scholarly activity, research, and professional development.

Resident Evaluation and Progression

  • Review resident performance, evaluations, and milestone achievement.
  • Participate in resident assessment, promotion, and progression decisions.
  • Help identify residents who may benefit from additional support and participate in remediation planning and implementation.
  • Ensure residents receive timely, meaningful feedback and appropriate supervision.

Faculty Development and Program Committees

  • Participate in and help lead the Clinical Competency Committee (CCC) and Program Evaluation Committee (PEC).
  • Support faculty development efforts related to resident education, assessment, feedback, and mentorship.
  • Collaborate with faculty to continuously improve educational experiences and program outcomes.
  • Promote a culture of inquiry, scholarship, professionalism, and lifelong learning.

Clinical Practice

  • Maintain an active clinical practice in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
  • Serve as a clinical role model and educator for residents and medical students.
  • Balance clinical responsibilities with protected administrative and educational duties.

Qualifications

The Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program Director must possess:

  • M.D. or D.O. medical degree is required.
  • Current certification from the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) or American Osteopathic Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (AOBOG); or hold credentials deemed equivalent to Certification by the ACGME’s Obstetrics and Gynecology Review Committee is required.
  • Demonstrated interest in medical education, resident teaching, and leadership.
  • Prior involvement in resident education, faculty development, curriculum design, or residency leadership is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and mentorship skills.
  • Experience as Core Faculty, Assistant/Associate Program Director, Program Director, or participation in residency committees (CCC, PEC, or similar) is preferred.
  • Candidates with recent scholarly activity such as peer-reviewed funding, publication of original research or review articles in peer-reviewed journals, chapters in textbooks, publication or presentation of case reports or clinical series at scientific society meetings, or participation in local, regional, or national committees or organizations are strongly preferred.
  • Have unrestricted credentials within Sutter Health and be licensed, or able to obtain a license, to practice medicine in the state of California upon date of hire.
