Opportunity Information

Sutter Medical Group (SMG) seeks to hire a Physician in Emergency General Surgery to join an established surgical team at Sutter Medical Center Sacramento (SMCS) in Sacramento, CA.

 

Key Workflow Details

  • Work Setting: Practice as an EGS Hospitalist within a 600-bed, tertiary care referral center; SMCS serves as a major hub for high-volume transfers throughout Northern California.
  • Clinical Scope: Focus on acute care "Bread & Butter" general surgery for patients ages 16 and older; includes complex intra-abdominal cases, appendectomies, small bowel obstructions, and colectomies.
  • Procedure Note: This role does not require endoscopy (No Endo).
  • Robotics: Access to robotic surgical systems is available; robotics training can be provided for interested candidates.
  • Daily Volume: High-volume environment typically requiring 3–4 operations within a 24-hour period.
  • APC Support: Exceptional APC coverage with 2 APCs during the day (M-F) and 1 at night. APCs function as robotic first-assists and handle the majority of the post-op clinic.
  • Technology: Advanced efficiency tools including EPIC EMR and Abridge AI for automated documentation.
  • Inpatient Care: Surgeon maintains clinical continuity by rounding on ICU patients; however, the Intensivist team remains primary for critical care and vent management.
  • Support Model: Dedicated administrative support to field patient calls; physicians maintain control over their post-op schedules.

 

Scheduling Structure

  • Schedule Type: Shift-Based
  • Shift Details: 24-hour shifts with On-site presence required from 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM; no in-house requirement after 7:00 PM (must maintain a 30-minute on-site arrival response time for night call).
  • FTE: per-diem (Supplemental)

Qualifications

General

  • Board Certified/Eligible in General Surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS).
  • Strong commitment to high-quality, patient-centered care and team-based practice.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Specialty-Specific
  • Demonstrated experience in high-volume, tertiary-level Acute Care Surgery workflows.
  • Comfort with a wide breadth of emergency surgical procedures; ability to treat patients 16+.
  • Willingness to mentor and supervise APCs within the surgical program.

Licensure & Certifications

  • Valid medical licensure in the State of California prior to starting.
  • Federal Unrestricted DEA.
