Opportunity Information

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is responsible for the coordination and oversight of medical and surgical operations at Sutter East Bay Medical Group (SEBMG). Reporting directly to the SEBMG CEO, the CMO serves as a key clinical leader, ensuring operational alignment with SEBMG’s mission, strategic objectives, and the implementation of the SEBMG Clinician Compact.


The CMO plays a central role in fostering clinical excellence, improving care coordination, supporting physician leadership, and enhancing the overall clinician and patient experience. This position also serves as a strategic partner in cross-functional collaboration with SEBMF, Sutter Hospitals, Sutter Ambulatory Surgery centers (ASCs), and the Sutter Health organization.

 

Key Responsibilities


• Provide operational leadership and oversight for clinician leaders, including Executive Medical Directors (EMDs), Primary Care and Specialty Medical Directors, and other designated leaders
• Serve as a dyad partner to the Sutter East Bay Medical Foundation (SEBMF) CEO and collaborate with Sutter East Bay hospital/ASC Chief Medical Executives (CMEs) to align operations and clinical goals

• Implement and support clinical strategic initiatives aimed at improving quality, efficiency, and care integration

• Represent SEBMG in Sutter Health system-wide initiatives and cross-functional forums

 

Duties


The duties of the Chief Medical Officer include all general and operational responsibilities listed below. These responsibilities reflect a balance of strategic oversight, clinical leadership, operational management, and collaboration with clinicians and administrative partners. Duties may evolve over time in alignment with organizational needs and strategic priorities.

General Responsibilities


• Stay informed of day-to-day operations through formal and informal channels to proactively address emerging issues
• Maintain open communication with clinicians to understand and respond to operational and cultural challenges
• Ensure effective communication across geographies, specialties, and leadership teams regarding clinical standards, updates, and issues.
• Foster clinician morale and serve as a liaison among clinicians, SEBMG leadership, SEBMF, East Bay Hospitals/ASC, and East Bay Division leaders
• Lead initiatives to improve patient experience, population health management and continuous process improvement
• Collaborate with clinicians and administrative leaders to embed the SEBMG Clinician Compact into daily practice
• Provide clinical insight and strategic guidance to the SEBMG Board of Directors
• Collaborate with SEBMF, Sutter Health hospitals/ASC, medical staff, and service line leaders on clinical integration and program development
• Partner with SEBMG leaders, Physician & APC Services, and HR Business Partner to support effective clinician HR functions, including resolution of individual issues
• Oversee and review risk and utilization management processes in collaboration with the CEO
• Contribute to PSA (Professional Services Agreement) negotiations with SEBMF/Sutter Health in partnership with the SEBMG CEO, Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), and Board
• Attend key governance, strategy, and operational meetings for SEBMG, SEBMF, the Division and Sutter system, as designated by the CEO

 

Operational Responsibilities

 

• Lead the development, review, and implementation of SEBMG clinical initiatives and operational policies, including standardization of protocols and establishment of best practices across SEBMG sites
• Oversee SEBMG’s clinical and operational processes via direct engagement with EMDs and Medical Directors
• Serve in a dyad leadership model with the SEBMF CEO and Great East Bay Division Chief Medical Executives to guide clinical operations
• Actively monitor and support initiatives in collaboration with SEBMG and divisional leaders across the following domains:

 

o Clinical quality
o Population health management
o Clinician recruitment and retention
o Patient service and experience
o Program and service line development
o Risk management and compliance

 

• Evaluate performance metrics and action plans; adjust strategies to ensure successful implementation
• Partner with the CEO, CAO, and Board on budgeting and strategic planning, in coordination with SEBMF
• Support budget alignment and performance metric monitoring with SEBMF counterparts
• Participate in clinician and leadership recruitment, onboarding, and development

Qualifications

• Must be a licensed physician in good standing with the California Medical Board
• Proven leadership experience in clinical operations, quality improvement, and clinician management
• Demonstrated ability to lead within a complex, multidisciplinary healthcare environment
• Strong communication, collaboration, negotiation, and organizational skills
